The Fable that Inspires Us

The Fable

A wealthy landowner lies to a young laborer, Khoai, promising his daughter’s hand in marriage in exchange for 3 years of hard work.

Khoai works tirelessly to fulfill his end of the deal. But when his wedding day arrives, he learns the ceremony is not for him. He confronts the landowner and is told he must do one more task.

Poor Khoai must find a hundred knot bamboo stalk and turn it into chopsticks for the wedding feast. Khoai’s search is futile.

Suddenly, a mystical old man appears and tells Khoai to find 100 single bamboo stems. He then shows Khoai a magic spell to achieve the impossible.

Khoai astounds the landowner and wedding guests by turning 100 single stems into a hundred knot stalk then back into 100 single stems.

Good and honest Khoai takes his rightful place in the bridegroom chair. The couple embrace and live happily ever after.
THE WINES
Vineyard Sources
Leveraging decades of relationships with growers, we have curated a set of bad ass vineyards for each of our Hundred Knot wines. The remarkable fruit from these vineyards are a culmination of decades of thoughtful and careful cultivation by growers with experience

Money Road: A Classic Napa Site
A classic 40-acre site in the heart of Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA, it sits right across the road due north from Silver Oak winery and typifies what valley floor fruit can become. The vineyard gave birth to Napa Valley’s first 100-Point Cabernet Sauvignon, and its combination of sandy loam and gravelly alluvial soils make for a well draining soil bed perfect for growing world class fruit.

Truchard Vineyards
Located in the Carneros district of southern Napa Valley, it was founded in 1974 by Tony and Jo Ann Truchard. The 420-acre plot of earth sits at the base of the southern tip of the Mayacamas Mountains, and the rolling hills feature a diverse array of soil types and microclimates. Soils are thin and the proximity to the San Pablo Bay lends itself to cool nights and fruit with beautiful natural acidity.

Rossi Ranch
Planted in 1910 by the Rossi family, this historic site is one of Sonoma County’s most breathtaking vineyard landscapes. Farmed organically, the undulating hills create a varying array of exposures, and the vineyard is surrounded by a dense forest of wild oaks, pine and fir trees. The vineyard features old-vine Zinfandel, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Alicante Bouschet.

Morgan Ranch
A historic property that sits at the feet of the Vaca Mountains on Napa’s east side, the 40 planted acres on the 288-acre property features Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Primitivo. A throwback property if there ever was one, the vineyard used to be a walnut orchard, and all the vines are planted on flat ground with mountains surrounding the entire ranch. Soils comprised of sandy loam and alluvial rock, make the perfect home for well structured fruit full of personality.

Baciagalupi Vineyard
One of the true legendary California estates and situated smack dab in the heart of Russian River Valley, the original plot of 121 acres was purchased by Charles and Helen Baciagalupi in 1956. Primarily planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the vineyard first gained notoriety during the Judgement of Paris in 1976, when Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay (using 40% Bacigalupi fruit) won the category triumphing over many more revered and establish French wines. With varying expositions and a soil mix of red clay, rocky loam and Cross-bedded quartzose sands and gravels, this is a perfect home for showcasing California fruit at its finest.

Oakville Ranch
One of the most unique and dramatic properties in all of Napa Valley, only 66 acres of the 330-acre estate is planted to grapes. The original mountain vineyard of the Oakville AVA, it sits perched at 1,400 feet above the Silverado Trail on Napa’s eastern side. Red volcanic rocky soils are farmed organically, producing low-yielding, superlative fruit that is some of the most revered in the entire Napa Valley.

Durell
A mainstay in the Sonoma County vineyard hall of fame, this hallowed plot of earth sits on the southeastern edge of the Sonoma Coast appellation, 30 miles east of the Pacific Ocean and 10 miles north of the San Francisco Bay. The property also spans into the outskirts of the Carneros and Sonoma Valley appellations as well. Planted in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the rocky basalt and uplifted marine soils rich in minerals provide an ideal setting for growing world class Chardonnay.

Gap’s Crown
Located on the western hillside of Sonoma Mountain in the town of Penngrove, it is situated in the northeast portion of America’s newest AVA, Petaluma Gap. Morning fog and afternoon winds are the hallmarks of this area, serpentining their way from the Pacific Ocean and Bodega Bay. Ranging from 320 to 820 feet above sea level, gravelly loam and volcanic soils serve as the underbelly of the vineyard, while the fruit is exposed to various maritime elements throughout the growing season. Most vines are planted above the fog line ensuring consistent sunlight which promotes full ripening. Gap’s Crown has become one of the most respected Pinot Noir vineyards since its inception in 2002.

Style & Approach
The wines of Hundred Knot are classically styled. Our focus is on nuance, complexity, and balance. We practice conservative winemaking using specific classical techniques tailored to express the distinctive qualities of each variety and vineyard source. Winemaker Timothy Milos’ approach is minimalist: do only what is necessary to reveal the vineyard and vintage. “Winemaking is the frame, the vineyard is the painting.”
